After several further voyages he qualified as a ; when not at sea, he developed his skills as a cross-country skier in the harsh environment of Norway's plateau. The aircraft landed a few miles apart without radio contact, yet the crews managed to reunite. Mindful of the loss of morale on Belgica, Amundsen provided for leisure time with a library of around 3,000 books, a gramophone, a large quantity of records and a range of musical instruments. Amundsen was full of praise for his dogs, and scorned the idea that they could not work in such conditions; on 21 November the party travelled 17 miles and climbed 5,000 feet 1,500 m.
